Michael Kamin Hart was 24 when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. At this age, young adults are just beginning their path to a promising future. Even in his condition, Hart continued to bring joy to those who were around him until his passing a year later. In honour of the life he lived, and the life that he could have had, his family decided to contribute to the Princess Margaret’s Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology Program. The program caters to the individual needs of young cancer patients, providing the resources to assist them throughout their difficult journey. The Michael Kamin Hart Award for Excellence in Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Care recognizes the staff members who have made a difference in the lives they encounter, through the supportive care and services they have provided.
To fund this award, Hart’s family organizes the annual “Hearts For Hart” golfing event held at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Guests showed their support by participating in a friendly team tournament against each other. This year’s attendees in particular were mostly Toronto-based young professionals and senior executives. They work hard, and they certainly know how to play hard! The full day event started with a warm up on the driving range before a quick lunch to fuel their energy for the competition. The participants got to wind down with delicious cocktails after a full afternoon spent on the golf course. The dinner portion of the event included the opportunity to bring home valuable auction and raffle items, such as a signed Raptors Jersey! Needless to say, everyone was light-hearted, cheerful and enthusiastic – a great reflection of how Michael Kamin Hart is remembered.
It was our pleasure to take part in such a meaningful event. We wanted to capture the inspiration that can be found behind every swing of the club, and in the little details that went into making the day possible. Hart’s legacy speaks to the reality of being a cancer patient, and the struggles that come with it. His battle continues to influence those who share the same story, to seek and provide support, so that they may have the same courage he had.I am text block.
